Well. I mean. Ummm. Thank you?

We can’t get enough of talking about the rich success made in 49ers history and lately, we’ve found ourselves bringing up the GOAT Jerry Rice after all this talk of wide receiver trades.

Leave it to a player on another team to bring up a great quarterback. With no prompt, Tyrann Mathieu thumbed this gem out:

Why thank you, Honey Badger.

Mathieu has played with and against some decent running quarterbacks. With the Houston Texans, he had Deshaun Watson, who has been transitioning into a drop-back, passing quarterback. When he was with the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC West, he was up against what was at one point considered the future of the position, Colin Kaepernick as well as Russell Wilson. In case you haven’t heard, Wilson is the next contestant on “What quarterback should make the most money” with his recent contract extensions looming.

Considering Mathieu has been with and up against some impressive running quarterbacks, that has to mean something. Steve Young always ran first until Bill Walsh got his hands on him in that trade that brought Young to San Francisco. From there, Walsh did everything possible to keep Young in the pocket and develop as a drop-back, pocket passer. Young did well enough to force the 49ers’ hand in shipping long-time starter Joe Montana off and claiming the job for himself. The fact he made the Hall of Fame certainly helps his case too. Young had some impressive runs but calling him a running quarterback is in the eye of the beholder. If you look at later in his career when he was anchored in the pocket, a running quarterback is an inaccurate statement.

When you look at all the recent running quarterbacks that turned up, it could be a decent argument. If you don’t think there’s enough running from Young, there’s always this.

Do you think Young is an underrated running quarterback?
