If they sit at fourth trading back seems more like a possibility.

The San Francisco 49ers are out of the first pick and the Nick Bosa sweepstakes which makes 2019 NFL mock drafts all the more interesting now. As the season winds down, we’ll be looking at where more and more players can go.

The latest from CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson has the 49ers taking Clemson defensive end Clelin Ferrell. Here’s what Wilson had to say about the pick:

Ferrell had 10 sacks for Clemson while playing on the best defensive line in football. He may not go this high but the 49ers need to find pass rushers despite taking defensive linemen in the first round from 2015-17.

An interesting highlight is Arizona did not take Nick Bosa, but instead Alabama offensive tackle Jonah WIlliams. That is not out of the realm of possibility, the Cardinals got a shiny new quarterback last year and want to keep him around for the next few years, protection is more of a necessity than pass rush.

Back to Ferrell; I’m all onboard with this pick. I’d love Josh Allen, but he’s going to the New York Jets at No. 3. I’d imagine Ferrell could go in and play at the Leo spot and lock things down. My one concern would be if the 49ers just elected to trade back and get Ferrell a few picks later. With Allen and Bosa being the top prospects on the board, the No. 4 pick could be prime for a quarterback-needy team to secure the services of one of the few signal callers to be in the 2019 draft.

This mock didn’t factor in trades (most mocks don’t) so we can’t fault them there, but if the 49ers sit at fourth, that may be the best position for teams to move up and make a deal. The New York Giants will need to get Eli Manning’s replacement figured out and while they say he can start for years, that’s nonsense and you know it. The Jacksonville Jaguars would also want to move up, as will Washington.

But if they reach a bit for Ferrell, it’s an intriguing idea. What do you think?
