April is here and the 49ers will make their first round pick in the NFL draft in just over three weeks. John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan will continue to work hard to bolster the roster in hopes of making a playoff push in 2018 after finally landing a franchise quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo and signing him to a long-term contract in February.

San Francisco could use reinforcements all over the roster, including pass rusher, cornerback and along the offensive line. But as we know, the most immediate needs aren’t always filled with first-round picks. Those players are brought in with the long-term in mind.

Let’s look at three more mock drafts from around the Internet and break down how each player would fit with the 49ers.

NFL.com (Peter Schrager): Derwin James, S, Florida State

James is often compared to Kam Chancellor, making him an obvious long-term fit for San Francisco with former Seahawks assistant Robert Saleh as defensive coordinator. James’ versatility and athleticism are his most appealing traits, making him an ideal defensive weapon as passing games continue to get more complex. He could cover tight ends, slot receivers and running backs while providing a physical presence near the line of scrimmage to defend the run. He’s also an outstanding blitzer.

However, safety isn’t an immediate need. The 49ers already have three capable players there: Jimmie Ward, Jaquiski Tartt and Adrian Colbert, who impressed as a rookie after being drafted in the seventh round. Adding James would mean one of those players hits the bench, with Colbert being the likely candidate. The 49ers could move Ward to slot cornerback, where he played during his first two seasons, and make Colbert the third safety in dime packages.

Here’s Schrager’s analysis of picking James:

He’s 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, and had arguably the best NFL Scouting Combine performance of any defensive back in this draft. The 49ers love the Richard Sherman and Ahkello Witherspoon combination at corner. Safeties Jimmie Ward and Jaquiski Tartt are entering the final year of their contracts. John Lynch — one of the greatest safeties to ever play the game — could pick one here.

The key point is Ward and Tartt being on the final year of their rookie contracts. Both are candidates for extensions given the way the team has gushed about both their abilities. But it appears the team is waiting for after the draft to engage in those negotiations, signaling the team might be open to finding eventual replacements with rookies.

In the meantime, Sherman and Witherspoon at corner, James and Tartt at safety, Ward at nickel and Colbert as the dime safety could give the 49ers one of the most talented secondaries in the league. It should also be noted free agent Eric Reid is unlikely to return after playing the second most snaps of the team’s defensive backs in 2017.
