Maybe now we need to see who they can take in the second round?
It was somewhat of a foregone conclusion that unless anything drastic were to change in free agency, the first couple of spots in the 2019 NFL draft were going to be unchanged as far as mock draft predictions.
Like yesterday, a mock from the Ringer’s Danny Kelly, has the scenarios we are becoming accustomed with. The Arizona Cardinals take Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray and the San Francisco 49ers get Nick Bosa.
First, here’s what Kelly said about the Murray pick:
This is a daring move for the Cardinals—they picked Josh Rosen in the first round just last year—but as the saying goes, fortune favors the bold. Murray is a rare prospect: He’s got franchise-changing upside, combining uncommon playmaking skills with a big arm; accuracy at all three levels; and elite speed and agility as a scrambler and runner. Murray doesn’t come without risk, but he’s got the skill set to transform the Cardinals offense under new head coach Kliff Kingsbury.
And here’s what he said about Bosa to the 49ers:
This is a no-brainer for the Niners, who can pair Bosa with the newly acquired Dee Ford to provide a massive upgrade to the team’s anemic pass rush. Bosa combines an explosive first step with powerful hands, a nonstop motor, and a well-rounded repertoire of pass-rush moves. He’s a day-one starter with the potential for double-digit sacks.
Things started getting interesting after this: Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams went to the New York Jets at No. 3 and the Oakland Raiders passed on Kentucky linebacker Josh Allen for Mississippi State edge-rusher Montez Sweat. Allen dropped to eighth and the Detroit Lions. Matt Patricia would have to be loving that.
Another pick of note in this draft is Ole Miss wide receiver D.K. Metcalf. A player once seen going to the early 20s is now picking up steam in the top-10. Going No. 5 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
One of the things I’ve entertained has been who would be available for the 49ers if they were to trade back into the first round. Since their second round pick is so high, it’s a possibility they could package a trade to get a second player if they see someone they don’t want to wait on. Washington safety Taylor Rapp is available at No. 26 (going to the Indianapolis Colts). Trading into the first round to snag him could be a decent move up. The 49ers also could go get another Iowa tight end and grab Noah Fant at 27. The possibilities of pairing him with George Kittle are endless.
It’s getting to start wondering what happens in the second round, because if reports keep up, Bosa may be coming to San Francisco.
