The NFL scouting combine begins this week in Indianapolis, Indiana as coaches, general managers and evaluators ascend upon Lucas Oil Stadium. Players will be put through a litany of tests as teams attempt to isolate the potential building blocks in the NFL draft from the rest of the pack.

The 49ers, after an impressive 5-0 run to end the 2017 season, still have plenty of needs to address to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2013. Let’s look at prospects at positions of need, including a possible early-round selection and a lesser-known player available later to watch at each spot.

Pass rusher

Name to know: Harold Landry, Boston College

Landry has been in discussion as the top edge player in the draft since the end of last season. He elected to stay at Boston College for his senior season and, despite a dip in statistical production, will likely go in the first round.(Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports)

He lacks the traditional height (6-3, 250) of many pass rushers, but long arms and elite burst of the line of scrimmage mask many of the apparent flaws. Landry’s speed around the edge is top-notch and his athleticism will be hard to ignore in combine drills.

Under the radar: Kylie Fitts, Utah

Fitts has a versatile playing style that could benefit the 49ers tremendously. He can play with his hand on the ground, standing up to rush the edge or dropping into underneath zone coverage. He uses his hands well to disengage from offensive linemen while relying on agility and relentless pursuit. The 49ers may see other needs as a higher priority. Quite frankly, that strategy could prove beneficial. Fitts (6-4, 258) in the third or fourth round would be a tremendous value while allowing the 49ers to address other positions early.
