Today we take a closer look at Georgia cornerback and the 2018 Jim Thorpe Award recipient Deandre Baker as the San Francisco 49ers may look to the second round to address their secondary.

Greetings Faithful! We are back with another scouting report. Today our focus turns to the secondary and the cornerback position with Georgia product and 2018 Jim Thorpe Award recipient Deandre Baker. The San Francisco 49ers may be wise to address a position currently comprised of aging veterans (Richard Sherman), players coming off major injuries (Jason Verrett & Jimmie Ward), and unproven young talent (Ahkello Witherspoon). In other words, the waters are muddy at best and it is fair to say that cornerback is a position of need for the team.

Would the San Francisco 49ers consider investing a day two selection at the position? If the answer is yes, then perhaps Deandre Baker will be one prospect to watch later this month. Let’s learn more about what Baker has to offer!

Summary:

This past season Deandre Baker started all 13 games for the Bulldogs of Georgia and recorded 40 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 10 pass breakups. A first-team All-SEC pick, Baker has not allowed a touchdown and recorded 5 interceptions since the start of the 2017 season.

One of the best corners this season in press coverage and one of the more physical corners this draft class has to offer, Deandre Baker made a positive impact in the Georgia Bulldogs’ defense. Don’t let his size fool you one bit. Baker played a physical brand of football and made his presence known.

Press coverage is a huge plus and strength in Baker’s game, and more often than not he wins the battle along the line of scrimmage. Is able to physically dominate receivers off of their route and take them out of the action. Baker has the experience playing in both man and zone coverages.

In addition, he has made positive results playing outside corner and in nickel. Baker will get himself involved in the run game and will crowd the box when the opportunity presents itself. Baker does a great job of following the quarterback’s eyes and anticipating where the play is going to occur.

The concern with Baker is his speed, especially on intermediate and deeper routes. Multiple times, watching game film, Baker was burned by those speedier receivers looking to stretch the field. Tackling and wrapping up his opponent have been inconsistent as well. He could give up yards after the reception if he is not in position to finish his tackles quickly. However, what I like most about Baker is his versatility. His ability to play any corner position, all of which have produced positive results is a big plus.

Lastly, Baker is as competitive as it gets, and is ready to challenge the top receivers on opposing teams…even if they are not sure who Baker is. Deebo Samuel learned this the hard way as seen below.

From a physical standpoint, Baker falls short of what the 49ers seek at the position. However, I will make the same argument for Baker as I did for Rock Ya-Sin, and that is his versatility and ability to take on multiple tasks on the field. Many times, watching his tape, Baker played bigger than his size. His ability to play aggressive in press coverage is a plus, and something this team could use more of. Baker would offer immediate high-level competition and his playmaking abilities would give him a chance to compete for a starting job right out of training camp. The next question is, where will Baker come off the board. Up until last month it looked like Baker was a lock to go in the first (He very well may), however after a so-so combine his stock has taken a slight hit. His value might have fallen to day two. If the 49ers plan to invest in a cornerback on day two Deandre Baker is a great choice.

What are you thoughts on Deandre Baker? Would you consider selecting Baker in the 2nd round?
