NFL power rankings: 2-0 49ers still top team in league

The 49ers didn’t dominate Week 2 like the did Week 1, but their 30-23 win over the Rams at SoFi Stadium was enough to keep them at No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports power rankings and the NFL Wire power rankings.

Heading into the season the 49ers typically sat anywhere between No. 3 and No. 5 depending on the power rankings we looked at. The analysis was almost always the same: they have a good team with questions at quarterback.

While QB Brock Purdy hasn’t necessarily answered questions about his long-term viability as a franchise signal caller, he’s answered questions about whether he can keep the 49ers’ offense viable by posting 30 points in consecutive weeks.

Here’s what USA TODAY’s Nate Davis wrote about San Francisco staying in the top spot:

Can’t do better than winning your first two games, especially when those victories come on the road. San Francisco is home the next three weekends and very likely to be 4-0 heading into a Week 5 Sunday nighter against Dallas.

Touchdown Wire’s Jarrett Bailey dove a little deeper:

The 49ers put up 30 points, once again, and they were two Brock Purdy overthrows away from scoring 40. They are basically fielding the NFL All-Pro team on either side of the ball with Kite Man as their quarterback, and no one seems to have any answers for them.

If the 49ers continue taking care of business they should remain in the No. 1 spot through Week 4 with games against the Giants and Cardinals coming up. Their Week 5 showdown with the Cowboys will be their most difficult  matchup of the season and provides the first real threat to their place atop the power rankings.

On the other hand, it’s also an opportunity for the 49ers to cement themselves in the No. 1 spot, which they may not relinquish if they get through Dallas unscathed.
