Nick Bosa falling to the 49ers in the NFL draft was once a pipe dream. Then rumors started swirling that Kyler Murray would go first overall to the Cardinals. Those rumors have grown legs to the point that Lance Zierlein calls the pick “the obvious choice,” which means the 49ers become the obvious destination for Bosa.

It’s obviously not a guarantee that San Francisco would take the Ohio State edge rusher if he drops to the second spot. However, adding the consensus top edge rusher in the draft to pair with newly-acquired Dee Ford would be extremely enticing.

Zierlein acknowledges that a trade back could be in play though after San Francisco added Ford in a trade with the Chiefs:

The acquisition of Dee Ford could allow the 49ers to target a trade-back in this spot, but why not add another edge rusher or a defensive lineman with the ability to play on the edge or in a reduced role in sub-packages?

A trade back was always a possibility for the 49ers, and it became more likely after they found a pass rusher via trade.

On the other hand, it’s difficult to fathom they pass on Bosa if he drops. He has the perfect combination of size, athleticism and skill set to thrive as a defensive end in the 49ers’ defensive scheme.

Perhaps they see another player later in the draft who can make a similar impact. If it’s obvious that Bosa is going to fall though, it seems equally obvious that San Francisco would select him.
