Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters today that he believes Colin Kaepernick remains a starting-caliber quarterback in the NFL. But the Seahawks aren’t signing him at this moment.
Seattle is the only team that has brought Kaepernick, the longtime 49ers passer, in for a visit since he became a free agent in early March. The Seahawks did so last week, visiting with Kaepernick and another free-agent quarterback, Austin Davis.
“At this time, we didn’t do anything with it,” Carroll said. “But we know where he is and who he is and we had a chance to understand him much more so. He’s a starter in this league. And we have a starter. But he’s a starter in this league, and I can’t imagine that someone won’t give him a chance to play.”
He said the “doors are always open” for bringing in Kaepernick at a later date.
The Seahawks have been looking for someone to back up Russell Wilson. As of now, the only other quarterbacks on the roster are Trevone Boykin, who was arrested twice this year, and Jake Heaps.
Carroll was asked if Kaepernick’s national anthem protest is the reason he remains unemployed.
“I don’t know that. Let’s wait and see. There’s some other guys still out too.”
