This draft would be…puzzling.

Sam Monson of PFF has released his latest two-round mock draft with a few surprises (depending on who you ask) as the Commanders select J.J. McCarthy second, Drake Maye goes to the Vikings after a trade-up with them double dipping at the quarterback position with Michael Penix Jr in the second round, and the 49ers using their first-round pick to select a cornerback.

According to Monson, the 49ers add another Iowa State product in T.J. Tampa, and here is his reasoning:

T.J. Tampa fits the prototype of a 49ers cornerback. He has had consecutive seasons of very impressive play and allowed just 240 yards on 49 targets last season. The team doesn’t necessarily need him to make an immediate impact, but they could certainly use a brighter future at one cornerback spot.

The 49ers added two cornerbacks in free agency with Rock Ya-Sin and Isaac Yiadom, but it doesn’t mean the 49ers will avoid the position in the draft. It is hard to predict if both will make the roster in April, depending on the draft. Getting the roster down to 53 makes decisions hard, and it is possible to draft a corner while giving him time to get up to speed.

Monson’s second pick has the 49ers addressing the offensive line, taking OT Kiran Amegadjie from Yale. Monson believes the 49ers have a right tackle issue, even if it didn’t cost them in games. Adding options is a necessity.

Amegadjie only played 234 snaps and allowed five pressures on 128 passing snaps. PFF graded Amegadjie at 89.5 offensively, 87.9 as a run blocker, and 79.9 as a pass blocker. Standing at six-foot-five and weighing 318 pounds, Amegadjie only played four games but amassed over 600 snaps in back-to-back seasons in 2021 and 2022. Over 732 pass-blocking snaps in 21 and 22, Amegadjie only allowed one sack.

For what it’s worth, in 2021, Amegadjie played right guard for 669 snaps and moved over to left tackle in 2022 and 2023, where he played 661 snaps and 234 snaps, respectively.
