There goes another pass rusher the 49ers could have looked into.

NFL free agency will get going tomorrow with the tampering period, but one player will not be participating in the festivities. The Los Angeles Rams have announced they have re-signed pass-rusher Dante Fowler. Ian Rapoport reports that it’s a one-year deal. The salary has not been disclosed as of this writing.

The Rams have been busy these past few days, first signing safety Eric Weddle and now Fowler. They still have some of their own players to take care of, namely quarterback Jared Goff. Given that Fowler is on a one-year deal, it will be interesting how much he was willing to take for such a short prove-it contract.

Fowler was traded to the Rams mid-season in 2018 for a 2019 third round and 2019 fifth round draft selection. The media is reporting that Fowler loved his time in Los Angeles and that may have been a factor into the decision for a one-year deal.

So cross another pass rusher off the 49ers’ free agency board. This shrinks the pool of available talent for them. It’s a pretty good guess they will look to the draft for an edge rusher, but they also could use a splash signing in free agency. Fowler could have been a good to kick the tires with.

The Rams locked him up just in time. The free agency chaos is about to begin.
