Kyle Juszczyk would be happy to have him on the roster.

The safety market will be a busy one in free agency, and it’s just gotten a little more crowded. The Baltimore Ravens are releasing safety Eric Weddle, per NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport, to clear $7.5 million in cap space. CBS Sports reporter Jason La Canfora anticipates the Ravens will make a strong push at free agent Tyrann Mathieu next week.

Weddle just turned 34, but he is coming off a pretty solid 2018 season. PFF ranked him tenth among 60 safeties in coverage snaps per reception and sixth in passer rating when targeted. Earl Thomas still has a higher ceiling and is 4.5 years younger, but Weddle is an intriguing stop-gap option if the team is looking for some short-term veteran help.

Adrian Colbert is currently atop the free safety depth chart, but he faces competition from D.J. Reed and potentially Jaquiski Tartt if the team wants to give Marcell Harris or another addition time at strong safety. There’s talent in the 49ers current group of safeties, but plenty of room to upgrade.

And one of Weddle’s former Ravens teammates has begun the recruiting process.
