Kyle Shanahan brings in another former Falcon that is a red zone threat

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the San Francisco 49ers are expected to sign former Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions tight end Levine Toilolo, pending his physical. He had 21 catches for 263 yards in Detroit last year. Toilolo played with the Falcons when Kyle Shanahan was the offensive coordinator for two seasons as well.

Toilolo, who is 6-foot-8, would be the fourth pass catcher that the team has added that is taller than 6-foot-3. The 49ers offense is transforming from small and quick to having a bunch of receivers that can play above the rim. Toilolo will battle Garrett Celek and rookie Kaden Smith to backup George Kittle. The team also signed undrafted free agent Tyree Mayfield out of Wyoming, who is 6-foot-3.

Toilolo played 32 games with the Falcons and started 26 games with Shanahan as offensive coordinator during the 2015 and ‘16 seasons. He caught 20 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns in those two seasons. Durability might have been key here as well, as Toilolo has missed just one game during his six-year career. If you guessed Toilolo went to Stanford, come collect your prize.
