The approach of the NFL combine starting Feb. 27 means some under-the-radar prospects are going to begin distinguishing themselves ahead of the NFL draft in April.

One of those players that could see a rise up draft boards is Oklahoma State receiver Marcell Ateman, who might find himself picked in Round 2 after largely being considered a Day 3 prospect after the college season ended. One of the teams intrigued is the 49ers, who could use some size at the position.

San Francisco may be interested in adding Ateman to Kyle Shanahan’s offense, according to Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst.

Ateman has been working with former Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson on his speed and 40 starts in Dallas. Johnson has been praising Ateman’s work ethic to teams he’s spoken with. I’m told the receiver-needy San Francisco 49ers are one of several teams high on Ateman.

Ateman (6-4, 220) could run in the 4.4s, according to Pauline, and jump as high as 42 inches in the vertical. He could develop into an intriguing prospect with that mix of athleticism, size and production in his final season with the Cowboys. The 49ers ranked 27th in the NFL in the red zone and could use a target that can elevate over defenders.

Ateman averaged 19.6 yards per catch in 2017. He brought in 59 receptions for 1,156 yards and eight touchdowns, showcasing the versatility to threaten downfield and in intermediate routes. He was largely overshadowed by fellow Oklahoma State receiver James Washington, who could also get drafted early.

The 49ers traded their own second-round pick to the Patriots for Jimmy Garoppolo. But they still have their pick in Round 2 acquired from the Saints in a draft-day trade last spring for a third-round selection that ended up being standout running back Alvin Kamara. That pick is 59th overall, which could be where Ateman goes if he impresses at the combine.
