After bringing in 18 undrafted rookies on Thursday, the 49ers needed to cut one more player from their roster.
That player will turn out to be running back Mike Davis, according to the NFL Network. Davis was a former fourth-round pick who was a disappointment in his two seasons as 49er, averaging 1.7 yards a carry as a rookie and 2.6 yards an attempt last year. The transaction had not been made as of Thursday.
Davis is emblematic of the mid-round picks that ultimately led to former general manager Trent Balke’s ouster in that he played at South Carolina, where Baalke had built a relationship with one-time coach Steve Spurrier and from where he used several picks. Injuries to starter Carlos Hyde the last two seasons meant plenty of early opportunitioes for Davis, which he was unable to seize.
Davis became expendable after the 49ers signed Tim Hightower and DuJuan Harris in free agency, traded for Kapri Bibbs and drafted Joe Williams. In addition, they brought in Matt Breida as an undrafted rookie.
