The 49ers’ extensive search for the top defensive prospects in this year’s draft will continue with Mississippi State edge rusher Montez Sweat. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the impending visit.

Sweat had an extremely productive final two years for the Bulldogs with 22.5 sacks and 30 tackles for loss. He backed that up with a very strong combine where he measured in at 6-5, 260 pounds and finished in the 77th percentile or better in virtually every athletic drill.

He’s a strong, fast edge rusher who appears to perfectly fit the profile for a defensive end in the 49ers’ system. It’s doubtful he’ll be considered at the No. 2 pick, but San Francisco has made it very clear they’re willing to trade back. Sweat would definitely be a target in a move down out of the top five or 10.

Sweat joins Rashan Gary, Quinnen Williams and Nick Bosa as the defensive players already set to visit the 49ers before the draft.
