The San Francisco 49ers have had an eventful offseason thus far, adding players like Tevin Coleman and Kwon Alexander. They also tried to land an even bigger name, Odell Beckham Jr., in a trade with the Giants.

According to Jay Glazer of The Athletic, the 49ers showed interest in Beckham but the Giants wanted the No. 2 overall pick, which San Francisco was unwilling to give up.

Via Glazer:

The 49ers were in several different times. They tried during the season and they tried here in the offseason. Someone with the Giants told me they were asking for the second pick of the draft from the 49ers, which the 49ers weren’t willing to do.

The Giants wound up sending Beckham to the Browns for the 17th overall pick, a third-rounder and Jabrill Peppers. That’s a significant haul, but there’s a big difference between the No. 2 overall selection and the 17th pick.

It’s not known if the 49ers made an offer that didn’t include the second overall pick or if trade talks died with the Giants asking for it, but they at least showed interest in Beckham.

According to ProFootballTalk, the 49ers were linked to Beckham last year, too, before he signed an extension with the Giants. So the connection was there, especially given the team’s need for words receiver help.
