Brock Purdy is almost certain to miss the 49ers’ Week 2 clash with the New Orleans Saints and, according to a new report on the quarterback’s toe injury, it could be a while before we see him back on the field.

Purdy was described as a “long shot” to play in Week 2 by Kyle Shanahan in Wednesday’s press conference as he deals with the toe injury and a shoulder problem.

And, in an appearance on Good Morning Football on Thursday, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport suggested Purdy could miss as many as five games.

Rapoport put Purdy’s recovery timeline at two to five weeks with what is described as a variant of turf toe.

If Purdy recovers quickly, then he could return after the Week 3 home opener with the Arizona Cardinals. However, if the injury is serious enough for him to be out for a full five weeks, then Purdy would also be unavailable for the Week 4 clash with the Jacksonville Jaguars and potentially critical in-conference matchups with the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It is a dreadful scenario for the 49ers, and places tremendous pressure on a injury-hit team to win what is still a favorable matchup in New Orleans this Sunday.

Should the 49ers improve to 2-0, then a prolonged Purdy absence and a potential 2-4 start could be viewed as survivable for a team hoping to return to the playoffs.

But if San Francisco tumbles to defeat in the Superdome, it could soon be getting late early for the 49ers and their 2025 playoff hopes.
