On Monday, we shared how Brock Purdy was dealing with an “annoying injury” that has made him day-to-day.

Also on Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that it would be a reach to say Purdy is on track to start this week since “No one has said that.” The next two games the 49ers play are on natural grass, but that won’t determine whether Purdy plays.

The Athletic’s Dianni Russini provided the latest update about the 49ers’ starting quarterback and what she’s hearing on her podcast, Scoop City:

Here’s what I can tell you about Brock Purdy and Ricky Pearsall. The San Francisco 49ers had Week 8 circled as this is going to be it. This is when these two are going to be able to come back.

Russini said Brock went through a workout on the field before the 49ers played the Falcons, but that workout did not leave Purdy feeling better about himself once he was done:

We’ll see what happens if he practices on Wednesday, but as of late Sunday night, from a couple of conversations I was having, it’s still really up in the air. I was told that he didn’t really feel that great. So, we’ll see how this progresses over the next few days. And he shared, too, how frustrated he is. He doesn’t want to sit and watch this happen, especially after just getting paid.

You can be the biggest team player on the planet. Eventually, you want to play. Eventually, you want to lead the team that everyone in the building considers to be your team. But you can’t help the club from the tub. So you can only imagine how frustrated Brock is, especially with an injury as fickle as turf toe.

Russini continued:

And, it sounds like it’s one of those nagging pains, too, where it’s just like you’re trying, you feel like you can go a little bit more, and then you push it — that’s when the pain comes back. We’ll see how they figure that out.

Shanahan told reporters that Pearsall is in the same boat as Upton Stout. They’ll be evaluated this week, along with Purdy. There’s not much to figure out if you’re the 49ers. If Brock has any setbacks or is dealing with pain, he sits. You can’t risk Purdy coming back prematurely.
