The Seattle Seahawks, who have made a habit of signing one-time 49ers, are considering the most prominent one yet.
According to the NFL Network, quarterback Colin Kaepernick flew from New York to Seattle last night and will meet with team officials today. Head coach Pete Carroll said recently that the team was interested in having Kaepernick back up starter Russell Wilson this season.
A league source said the Seahawks also were looking at former Rams quarterback Austin Davis today. Davis, 27, most recently was with the Broncos. Denver released him in December.
Kaepernick, 29, became a free agent on March 9 and, two and half months later, the Seahawks are the first team to bring him in on a visit. Many around the league feel as if the lack of attention he received is payback for his refusal to stand during the national anthem last year, which Kaepernick said he did to spotlight abuses against minorities in this country, especially by police.
Others have insisted that the quarterback’s run-centric skill set, which took the NFL by storm in 2012, no longer is effective. The 49ers, for instance, retained none of their 2016 quarterbacks in favor of a group that is well-versed in pocket passing.
The Seahawks’ backup quarterbacks currently are Trevone Boykin and Jake Heaps. Boykin filled in well for Wilson at times last year but was arrested on misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession and public intoxication in March. He had a second arrest for possibly violating his probation because of the same incident.
