This seems a little fishy, but this is … something.
I’ll be honest, the latest rumors involving Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals would seem to push this thing over the top, but also seem a little too good to be true. NFL Draft analyst Tony Pauline reported on Sunday that over the weekend, Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury was telling people at the NFL Combine that, “it’s a ‘done deal’ the Cardinals will select the Oklahoma Sooners quarterback with the first pick of the draft.”
Cardinals general manager Steve Keim has the final say on personnel, so Kingsbury could say all he wants and it might mean nothing. At the same time, Kingsbury was hired to rev up the Cardinals offense, and if he thinks Kyler Murray is the guy to do it, it makes sense for the Cardinals to make it happen. I mean, in for a penny in for a pound, right?
All that being said, doesn’t this seem just a little too obvious? I mean, if they want to take Murray, that’s great since it leaves the 49ers in full control of the draft board. It just strikes me as a little bit fishy that Kingsbury would be going around telling everybody this is going to happen. This is not to say this report is false, but it just seems a little odd.
Of course, the Cardinals hold the number one pick, so there’s no way someone can leap ahead of them to snag Murray out of their grasp. This would seemingly hurt their leverage in trading Josh Rosen, but I suppose if they start calling around shopping Rosen, they really would not have a ton of leverage anyway. Washington is sufficiently desperate enough at the quarterback position that there is still room for some measure of leverage.
I would love to see the Cardinals draft Murray, but I’m also trying not to get my hopes up too much for the time being. But who knows, maybe this really is happening.
