The reason being the Rams were disappointed in his 2018.
The Los Angeles Rams signed Ndamukong Suh on a one-year “prove it” deal, and Suh didn’t prove it. Ian Rapoport reports that the Rams will not be looking to bring back Suh for 2019.
The appearance was on an NFL Network video that hasn’t been posted as of this time, but here’s what was said via our sister Rams site, Turf Show Times:
Per RapSheet, the Rams were disappointed with Suh’s 2018 regular season performance. Sunday’s reinvestment in Dante Fowler at $14 million created another obstacle for Suh to be re-signed. Per Rapoport, Suh wants to stay with a team on the west coast, potentially San Francisco, Seattle, or the L.A. Chargers.
So let’s look at that last bit: a team on the west coast, and the San Francisco 49ers are listed.
The 49ers have D.J. Jones getting ready for a big season with them declining Earl Mitchell’s option. The latter was ceding playing time to Jones as the 2018 season wore on and is looked at as an option on the defensive interior. Then there’s Suh.
Suh may be wanting a bit of revenge for one year and no deal with the Rams, but he was also cut by the Miami Dolphins before arriving in Los Angeles and didn’t put up the numbers he did in the past. In 2016, Suh managed 5 sacks, 72 tackles, one recovered fumble, and six defended passes: That translates to an absolute bear at the line. Look at his 2017 numbers and there’s a slight decline but still production…just not enough production to merit his $16.985 million salary. The Rams got him and he had a slightly better season than 2017, but still not the ridiculousness he saw his first few years in the league.
Despite all of that, Suh is still a decent player, but I doubt he’s going to start coming cheap. He could come to the 49ers, but he’d be looking to start and the 49ers just don’t need him. Someone would be willing to give him money for another year to do just as much. The 49ers may have their line already figured out and are already in this free agent madness with Kwon Alexander getting a huge payday.
