The Carolina Panthers have added 49ers executive Martin Mayhew to their list of interviewees for their general manager position, according to a report from Pro Football Talk.
The Panthers are expected to retain Marty Hurney beyond the one-year contract he signed to be the interim replacement for Dave Gettleman after he was fired in July. Hurney was the GM in Carolina from 2002 to 2012 and Gettleman has since taken the same job with the New York Giants.
Mayhew, 52, was brought in by the 49ers as a senior personnel executive last February to provide first-time GM John Lynch some experienced help. Mayhew previously spent seven seasons as the general manager of the Lions while spending 15 seasons with the organization.
Mayhew was in charge when Detroit drafted quarterback Matthew Stafford, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and pass rusher Ezekiel Ansah, who is slated for free agency this spring and has been linked to San Francisco.
