Former 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster won’t have to wait long to suit up for Washington. He won’t be suspended by the NFL following his November arrest due to an alleged domestic violence incident in Tampa Bay that led to his release from the 49ers according to JP Findlay of NBC Sports.

Adam Schefter of ESPN tweeted that Foster would be fined instead.

The incident last November was the second time Foster had been arrested for domestic violence, but prosecutors in Florida dropped the charges in early January. Foster remained on the Commissioner’s Exempt List while the NFL concluded its investigation.

Foster would be eligible to return to Washington immediately if he’s not suspended and taken off the Commissioner’s Exempt list.

For San Francisco, a potential suspension wasn’t the reason they released the 25-year-old. He violated rules set out by the team according to general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. What rules he violated were never made public, but he did have his on-again off-again girlfriend Elissa Ennis at the team hotel in Tampa Bay prior to their Week 12 matchup with the Buccanners. She made the call late Saturday night to police alleging domestic violence by Foster. He was released by the team the next morning.

Foster served a two-game suspension to start last season stemming from a pair of separate misdemeanor charges last offseason, one for marijuana possession in Alabama, and another for gun possession in California.

Washington claimed Foster off waivers shortly after his release from San Francisco. He’s been on the Commissioner’s Exempt List since. Foster, who was the No. 31 overall pick in the 2017 draft by the 49ers out of the University of Alabama, played 16 games in his one-plus seasons with San Francisco. He racked up 101 tackles and two pass breakups.
