The 49ers can use some additional depth at tight end. They looked for depth by having veteran tight end Chris Gragg in for a workout according to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco.

Gragg, 28, was a seventh-round pick of the Bills in the 2013 draft out of Arkansas. He caught 24 balls for 251 yards and two touchdowns in 32 games across three seasons in Buffalo.

He spent 2016 and 2017 injured, and hasn’t played since 2015.

The intriguing thing about Gragg is his exceptional athleticism. He ran a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash at the combine with a 37 1/2-inch vertical and a 125-inch broad jump. Mockdraftable has George Kittle listed as his top athletic comparison.

In a less consequential 49ers-related coincidence – Gragg and wide receiver Marquise Goodwin were both selected by the Bills in the 2013 draft with picks they acquired in a trade with the Rams. Goodwin and Gragg were teammates for all three of Gragg’s seasons with the Bills.

San Francisco doesn’t necessarily need a tight end, but some stronger depth at the position in training camp would help the competition for roster spots. Having a player in for a workout who compares athletically to Kittle makes a lot of sense.
