The safety market is settling in.

The safety market appears to be settling in well for Earl Thomas to land a sizable pay day. A few hours after Landon Collins agreed to a $14 million per year deal in Washington, Tyrann Mathieu is signing a three-year, $42 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, per Adam Schefter.

It did not seem like Mathieu was ever on the 49ers radar, but he is setting the market if they want to make a run at Thomas. We’ve heard repeatedly that Thomas wants to be the highest paid safety in the NFL. I don’t know that at his age he could get $15 million per year on a four-year deal, but if he wants a two-year deal, it seems like he should be able to secure that kind of contract.

The 49ers pounced on Kwon Alexander right out of the gate, but they have been quiet on the safety front. They are expected to be in the mix for Thomas, but we’re in a bit of a wait-and-see period for now. Thomas is the best safety on the market, and realistically he does not need to rush things. With Mathieu and Collins off the market, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Thomas settle on something later tomorrow.
