The 49ers defense improved significantly as the 2017 season wore on. It became an underrated storyline when Jimmy Garoppolo stole the show while leading the team to a 5-0 record in his starts. Perhaps the most important player on the other side of the ball was Reuben Foster, one of San Francisco’s two first-round draft picks last spring.

But Foster’s offseason could dramatically change his standing with the team. He’s subject to a lengthy suspension following Sunday’s arrest for domestic violence and possession of an assault rifle. It was his second arrest in nearly a month after being hit with marijuana charges in Alabama Jan. 12.

Foster was one of the league’s best linebackers as a rookie, but his status is now in flux. His decision making may force the 49ers to look for contingency plans if he can’t stay out of trouble, which could mean investing in Foster’s position early in the NFL draft.

Here’s an introduction to the linebackers the 49ers should consider in the first three rounds…

Smith was one of the best defenders in college football last season for the Bulldogs. He has the size (6-1, 225) of new-age linebackers in the league and offers strength that is rare for his frame. Smith plays similarly to Atlanta Falcons centerpiece Deion jones, bringing speed into contact that overwhelms offensive linemen in space. He’s a top-10 pick and a defensive core player to build around.
