In a recent KNBR appearance, Ward talked about the 49ers draft and then hinted maybe he should be brought in.
The one addition the San Francisco 49ers did not make in free agency was addressing the free safety position. Well, besides signing Jimmie Ward for an additional year. Earl Thomas may have been a fit, but he signed with the Baltimore Ravens. But don’t worry, there’s still a pool of players available and T.J. Ward may have hinted he’d like a phone call. In a recent KNBR appearance, Ward offered some thoughts on what the 49ers may do in the 2019 draft and his feelings towards the backfield.
“Yeah, I’m going [No. 2 pick] Bosa. Definitely I’m definitely going Bosa. You need somebody who is going to get to the quarterback and opposite Dee Ford. I can see them being trouble for a long time. That’s what we had in Denver. We had linebackers that’s gonna run sideline to sideline. And I think that’s what Mr. lynch is trying to do right now. He’s going to bring two guys off that edge, that’s going to make the quarterback—and then you got playmakers on the back end. I don’t know if they have that yet, right now. They may need to get it in free agency. *coughs and laughs* but we’ll see what happens.”
Ward will turn 32 this year. He was released from the Denver Broncos in 2016 and went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2017 for a one-year deal. It seems like age crept in because his 2017 was a severe decline from previous years. In 2017 Ward played in 12 games and notched three passes defended and 41 tackles. Not terrible, but for someone who didn’t play in 2018, it’s a wonder on what he could contribute.
John Lynch has already said he’s happy with the free safety position in an appearance on 49ers live. That’s not to stop the 49ers from drafting their free agent of the future, but perhaps it indicates they aren’t going to be window shopping for veterans anytime soon.
