Terrell Owens is a Hall of Fame wide receiver, and the 49ers announced Wednesday they will recognize him as such by inducting him into the team Hall of Fame later this year.

Owens’ entry into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton was as tumultuous as his playing career. He spent his 15 NFL seasons with five different teams, and his eight-year stint with the 49ers was his only stop longer than three years.

San Francisco drafted Owens with the No. 89 overall pick in the 1996 NFL draft. He went on to have nine 1,000-yard seasons, he led the league in touchdowns three times, and posted eight seasons with 10-plus touchdowns. He was a six-time Pro Bowler and a five-time All-Pro.

Owens is No. 3 on the all-time receiving yards list, No. 8 in receptions and No. 3 in receiving touchdowns. He’s second behind Jerry Rice in all of those categories in the 49ers’ franchise record book.

I am so humbled to be mentioned with the likes and greats of Joe Montana, Steve Young, Jerry Rice and many others that have represented the San Francisco 49ers organization,” Owens wrote in a statement according to the Sacramento Bee. “I wouldn’t be who I am and have accomplished what I did, number one, without God and without the push of my teammates and coaches, especially Coach Larry Kirksey and Coach George Stewart. The Bay Area is where I began my career, and I will forever be indebted to the 49ers and recognized as one of the 49ers greats. I am honored to be inducted in the 49ers Hall of Fame as this is a special moment with a special group of individuals. Thank you, again, to the 49ers organization and 49ers Faithful.”

No date has been announced for the ceremony. Owens becomes the 28th former player to be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame. Tom Rathman in 2017 was the latest inductee.
