The San Francisco 49ers agreed to trade linebacker Dee Winters to the Dallas Cowboys, per Ian Rapport. Winters is the odd man out after the Niners signed Dre Greenlaw in free agency.

Winters played well in his role last season for the Niners, especially with all of the moving parts. However, Winters is entering the final year of his contract, and the addition of Nick Martin in the third round last year makes him somewhat expendable on the roster.

The linebackers on the roster now consist of:

Fred Warner
Dre Greenlaw
Nick Martin
Tatum Bethune
Luke Gifford
Garret Wallow
Jalen Graham

The official pick the 49ers received in exchange for Winters is No. 152, which is in the fifth round. We know how the Niners adore their fifth-round picks. This gives them another swing late in the draft to add a prospect who can potentially make their roster.

Greenlaw Winters would have fit Raheem Morris’s scheme well, but that would be as a linebacker walking down as a pass rusher. That just so happens to be the same position that got Martin drafted. Martin is cheaper for a longer period of time.
