Trey Lance has been relegated to thoughts of the future once again after his season-ending ankle injury in Week 2 against the Seahawks.  He made an appearance at the team’s Monday night home game against the Rams in Week 4, and now it sounds like he’ll be ready to hit the road soon.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday told reporters Lance didn’t make the trip to the East Coast with them because of the recency of his ankle surgery. He’s still finding a way to stay involved though, and it doesn’t sound like his absence on road trips will last for much longer.

“It’s tough for this week,” Shanahan said. “He can Zoom into our meetings and stuff so he stays a part of the gameplan, but still couldn’t travel. Just wasn’t worth the rehab and stuff for his leg. But I think this is the last trip he’ll miss. I think he’s able to come with us after this.”

The 49ers next road trip is a short one down to Los Angeles on Oct. 30. After that they’re not on the road again until they go to Mexico City to face the Cardinals on Nov. 21. Their final two trips are Seattle and Las Vegas.

Traveling with the team isn’t necessarily important for Lance in terms of being at the game, but being around the team and in meetings and continuing to stay in the mix as the team’s future QB1 will be vital as he aims to get as much development out of this season as possible.
