The start of OTAs brought a welcome sight for the 49ers – Jimmy Garoppolo dropping back and throwing in a practice setting for the first time since tearing his ACL in Week 3 last season.

Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee had video of Garoppolo throwing with the 49ers’ other quarterbacks:

It’s one thing to see Garoppolo throwing, but the fact he’s moving so well in his drop backs is perhaps the most important development.

His recovery from that ACL tear is the biggest story line of the offseason for San Francisco. If he makes it through the offseason program and training camp with no setbacks, and is 100 percent healthy for Week 1, it puts the 49ers in a great spot to contend out of the gate.

Anything less than that puts them at a disadvantage in a year where their margin for error is not very wide.

We still haven’t seen Garoppolo move around a lot or navigate a crowded pocket, but the fact he’s able to drop back at something close to full speed is a good sign that he’s trending in the right direction. That’s about as good as the 49ers can realistically ask for to start OTAs.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters after practice that Garoppolo won’t do anything more than individual and seven-on-seven drills until training camp.
