— Rookie linebacker Donavin Newsom was released from the hospital Thursday, two days after he was involved in a scary collision at 49ers practice.

Newsom, an undrafted free agent out of Missouri, crashed into strong safety Chanceller James late in Tuesday’s session, leaving him unconscious and still on the field. An ambulance was called in and he was taken to Stanford Hospital where he spent the next two nights.

Newsom did not suffer any damage to his spine or neck but did have a concussion. He had balance issues on Wednesday, his agent said, which is why he was kept an additional night for observation.

While Newsom was on his way to the team hotel in Santa Clara on Friday, the rest of the 49ers were on a flight to Kansas City, Mo. where they will take on the Chiefs Friday in the teams’ preseason opener.
