They’ll face Jacoby Brissett instead of Sam Howell

The San Francisco 49ers saw their winning streak snapped on Christmas against the Baltimore Ravens. They had covered the point spread in each game, too. Well, if there was ever a defense that you wanted to play to bounce back after turning the ball over four times, it’s the Washington Commanders.

Oddsmakers have installed the Niners as 13.5-point favorites over the Commanders for Week 17. That’s where the number opened, and, despite Washington making a quarterback change, the number remains at 13.5.

Sam Howell has been benched for the final two games of the season. The 23-year-old showed flashes at points during the season, but he went 6-22 against the Jets for only 56 yards in Week 16. Howell threw for 102 yards the week prior against the Los Angeles Rams, and 127 before that against the Miami Dolphins. The experiment needed to come to an end.

Jacoby Brissett came in late in each of the previous two weeks and surpassed Howell’s yardage in no time. He looks comfortable and honestly like a quarterback who could’ve led a team like the Jets or Vikings to the playoffs.

So, on the surface, this seems like it’ll be an easy win for the 49ers. But they have to travel across country on a short week against a veteran quarterback who has plenty of weapons to throw the ball to.

But Ron Rivera’s defense has been lousy all year. They’ve given up 30, 28, 45, 45, 31, and 29 since the 49ers bye week. The Niners offense should face little to no resistance on Sunday.
