The 2023 regular season is in the books. The real season begins on Saturday as Super Wild Card weekend kicks off. The regular season has its fair share of moments to remember, but the playoffs are where legends are made and remembered forever.
The 49ers have the luxury of the bye week to rest and gain players back into the fold, while the NFC will fight for their lives this weekend trying to advance.
The question is: Who do you think will be the MVP of the playoffs?
Brock Purdy
The second-year quarterback has a chance to silence his loudest critics with a long playoff run. While it looks like the MVP is out of his reach, a Super Bowl MVP will be much more satisfying for Purdy. The lights will be on, the defenses will get tougher, and it’s time for Purdy to lead this team to Las Vegas.
Christian McCaffrey
The odds on the favorite to win OPOY will have an extra week to rest his ailing calf and get ready for the playoff run. The 49ers will lean on their star running back and continue to count on his efficient production. In my opinion, McCaffrey is the most likely to be the 49ers MVP in the playoffs.
George Kittle
Kittle is coming off a stellar season. The discussion for the best tight end in the NFL runs through Kittle again. The playoffs are the perfect time for Kittle to shine, as he has a track record of performing under the bright lights.
Deebo Samuel
Samuel was vocal about his dissatisfaction with his play in 2022. In 2023, Samuel sure fixed that as he returned to the form he displayed in 2021. When the 49ers need a play, Samuel is the one to count on. This offense goes as he does as far as attitude and physicality. The team will need both to run through the NFC.
Brandon Aiyuk
Aiyuk is coming off a career year. The connection between Aiyuk and Purdy was on full display against Washington. If Purdy is playing well, then most likely, Aiyuk is catching passes and gaining big yards. Against the league’s best corners, Aiyuk has a chance to elevate his play.
Nick Bosa
Defense wins championships. Bosa inked a mega-extension and turned in a 10.5 sack season. The easiest way to shut passing attacks down is to sack the quarterback, especially on third down. Bosa and the defense will get two weeks to rest and sprint to the finish line. The potential return of Arik Armstead only strengthens this defensive line, and Bosa will get more one-on-one opportunities.
The field
Fred Warner? Charvarius Ward? Javon Hargrave? An unlikely 49er like Deommodore Lenoir, Tashaun Gipson Sr, Dre Greenlaw, or Ji’Ayir Brown? There’s always someone who steps up outside of the normal stars during the playoffs.
