It’s hard to envision the 49ers doing anything other than selecting an offensive lineman with their first-round pick in this year’s draft. They could use upgrades at at least two positions, and they need to start building out some better depth that could also help them down the road. In a post-combine mock draft from Touchdown Wire the 49ers address their offensive line needs by selecting Oklahoma offensive tackle Tyler Guyton.
This isn’t the first time Guyton has been sent to the 49ers in a projection, and it’s unlikely to be the last.
At the combine Guyton measured in at 6-8, 322 pounds. In workouts he moved extremely well and backed up what already shows on tape. He’s a big OT who has plenty of athleticism to get out and move the way OTs need to get out in move in the 49ers’ offense.
Projection is going to be key with Guyton though. In four college seasons, two at TCU and two at Oklahoma, he played just 1,095 total snaps in 27 games. He also started just 15 of those games.
There’s plenty to like about Guyton as a prospect though and his experience at both left and right tackle make him a prime candidate to hold down the RT job until Trent Williams retires, and then flipping to the other side as a long-term answer at left tackle. San Francisco would just need to be confident in his continued development. If they believe he’ll be ready to start and be effective in 2024 it’s certainly a logical selection.
