McCaffrey said his second choice would be Trent Williams after Purdy
I’m looking forward to the time when a player is asked who he’d vote for when it comes to any award, and that player mentions themselves.
49ers tight end George Kittle thinks Christian McCaffrey should be the MVP. McCaffrey, when talking to Tom Brady on SiriusXM, shared his top two MVP candidates. Both of whom play for the Niners:
“If I had my vote, it’d be Brock [Purdy] as the MVP and Trent [Williams] would be the second in line.
Vote for Brock, man. That guy deserves it, man. I know, obviously, you respect that. He’s been unbelievable for this team and I hate when I hear people say anything negative, ‘Oh he’s just a system quarterback.’ Everyone’s a system quarterback. That’s part of what being a quarterback is in my eyes. I mean, I don’t know much about the position.
I try to stay in my lane and just try to get open and block and do all the other things. But I mean, when you play within a system, that’s about all you can ask for. And then occasionally you make plays outside of the X’s and O’s and that’s all he’s done all year. So he gets my vote.”
Not a bad argument, Christian.
Brady said that if there were an MVP award for the offensive lineman, then Williams would run away with the award:
“I watch big Trent there blocking for everybody. Not saying that Trent’s gonna take the MVP away, but if there was an award given to the offensive lineman, Trent would be the one to get it in my opinion because of what he does up front. He’s pretty unbelievable.”
Watching the size of the holes when the 49ers run left backs up everything Brady said above. Trent moves like a tight end. It’s surprising to see him move at the speed he does every week.
If the 49ers win out, somebody has to win the MVP on the team, right? It’s an historic offense that has played a far more difficult schedule than the other candidates. Whether it’s Purdy or McCaffrey, they’d all have head-to-head wins against Lamar Jackson, Dak Prescott, and Jalen Hurts, which has to count for something.
McCaffrey pulling votes away from Purdy, and vice versa, could be the one downfall. The debate about who is MVP gets repetitive. But acknowledging that the Niners have two legitimate candidates says a lot about this team.
