To go internal or outside of the organization? That is the question Kyle Shanahan will decide when hiring a defensive coordinator.

49ers QB Purdy shares regrets from SB58 loss to Chiefs

“There’s things that happened throughout the game like [in] the second half I just wish we would have been on,” Purdy told reporters. “With the opportunities that we had with their turnovers or our defense getting stops.”

“I just keep thinking about those three and outs that we had. And on [the] opportunity we had to take control of the game.

“And so, there’s a couple of plays where, I think, I would have hit BA on some of the reads,” Purdy added. “But outside of that, it’s just a culmination of the whole game.

“You could have done a million things, right? At the end of the day, it’s [a] team sport. As a team, we all could’ve done a little bit better in some areas and stuff, but we win and lose together.”

49ers Could ‘Swing Big’ on Star Projected for $80 Million Deal

“Cornerback depth is also needed, and if the 49ers swing big in free agency, it could be for a top corner like Jaylon Johnson or L’Jarius Sneed.”

Jaylon Johnson Has His Mind ‘On the Money’

Sneed, who suited up for the Chiefs in Super Bowl 58, would be a possibility for the 49ers, but Johnson is not just the top corner available in free agency, he is No. 1 among all corners. While there has been some momentum toward Johnson re-signing in Chicago, he made clear that he will follow the money.

“Heart’s definitely in Chicago, mind’s definitely on the money,” Johnson told NFL.com this month. “So, I mean, we’ll figure out if we can make them both come together and get something done. I’m looking forward to see what’s to come.”

Why the 49ers Should Trade Deebo Samuel

In addition, Samuel never has been a good route runner, and he’s getting worse. He absolutely cannot beat quality man-to-man coverage, as we saw in the Super Bowl when Chiefs nickelback Trent McDuffie shut him down.

Which means Samuel can’t get himself open. And that means he’s only effective if the opponent is playing zone coverage or if he’s catching screen passes. And he’s still extremely dangerous with the ball in his hands, but he has become one of the limited players on the 49ers offense.

Richard Sherman Has Brutal Message For San Francisco 49ers After Super Bowl OT Blunder

While many are blaming head coach Kyle Shanahan for the debacle, former Stanford star Richard Sherman blamed the veterans on the team. On a recent episode of Undisputed, Sherman revealed how concerning it was for veteran players to be confused about the rules. He cited that every team has a rules meeting at the beginning of the season to go over changes, so for the 49ers players not to be aware of the change was baffling.

NFL Free Agency Rumor: San Francisco 49ers’ Chase Young to Atlanta Falcons?

“The 49ers enjoyed one of Young’s best performances in the Super Bowl, and on paper, the ex-Washington Commanders star makes sense as a long-term fit alongside Nick Bosa, his former Ohio State teammate,” CBS Sports writes. “But they’d also get a solid compensatory draft pick if he walks, and his overall half-season performance after the trade deadline probably won’t justify the money he’ll command on an extension. Other clubs, meanwhile, figure to be more desperate for pass-rush help.”

49ers fire Steve Wilks: Former Rams DC Brandon Staley favorite to sign?

Staley had the number one defense as the coordinator of the Rams in 2020, launching from that into being the head coach of the Chargers starting in 2021. He was fired in the middle of last season and has yet to sign with a team, potentially even waiting out the 49ers job.

It would give San Francisco a unique look at Sean McVay’s offense next season.

No. 7 – Brock Purdy

The “skill or system” debate may have prevented you from thinking straight regarding Purdy, but allow me to simplify this for you: In the most trying, pivotal moments of the 2023 postseason, Purdy repeatedly delivered. He led a frantic comeback to take down the Packers and avoid an embarrassing home defeat in the Divisional Round, then engineered an even greater comeback a week later over the Detroit Lions, in which Purdy salted away the game with – surprise! – his sneaky scrambling ability. The only disappointment was the fact he and the 49ers couldn’t come through in two massive third-down situations in Super Bowl LVIII, leading to an overtime defeat in a mixed bag of a game for the second-year passer. Purdy isn’t the most physically gifted quarterback, and he’s never going to command the same praise as a Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes, or maybe even a Jordan Love. But in most situations, the kid knows how to get the job done.

2024 NFL mock draft: With combine looming, QBs go 1-2-3 and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy goes to the Shanahan tree

31. San Francisco 49ers — Kingsley Suamataia, OT, BYU

Did you watch the Super Bowl? The 49ers saw it, too. They get the fairly raw but traits-laden Suamataia as their starting right tackle and potential blindside protector whenever they have to navigate a post-Trent Williams world. Suamataia will sometimes get too far over his skis in the run game and his hand placing is inconsistent overall, but his size and talent are obvious. He has the potential to be a plus player in the run and pass games
