It’s that time of year.

It wouldn’t be a hiring cycle if San Francisco 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters didn’t have his name brought up. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler wrote that Peters will be a top candidate once again during this offseason’s hiring cycle:

“A top candidate across the board will be 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters, though San Francisco could eventually slide him into its own GM role if John Lynch moves into a broader football operations role.”

After every year, Peters says that he enjoys the Bay Area and his role.

But what if the 49ers win it all this year? The assumption has been that Peters will get promoted if Lynch goes back to TV for what seems like four years now. Peters has found his name in these searches and gone through multiple interviews for a few years, too.

We could see a situation where Lynch doesn’t go anywhere, the 49ers win a Super Bowl, and Peters feels like it was “mission accomplished” and he moves on. That sounds good on paper until you realize what you’ve built. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Going somewhere else and trying to replicate the talent, culture, and coaching staff on the 49ers is easier said than done. We’ve seen the coaches who have left Kyle Shanahan have instant success. Will Peters feel like he can accomplish the same? Will he want to try? Those are some of the questions he’ll have to ask.
