It’s not typical that a point spread gets out of hand in a Super Bowl where team gets so heavily favored. That’s especially true now in an NFL where the gap between the playoff teams has shrunken dramatically.

Early movement on the point spread for Super Bowl LVIII between the 49ers and Chiefs indicates the early bets have come in on San Francisco.

BetMGM had the 49ers favored by 1.5 points following their NFC championship game victory over the Lions. A week out from the game that spread has moved to the 49ers giving 2 points.

This could be due to money coming in on San Francisco. Books set lines in hopes of getting equal action on both sides, so points toward the 49ers would generally mean money has come in on them.

Sportsbooks may also be accounting for key Chiefs injuries to offensive lineman Joe Thuney and defensive end Charles Omenihu and ticking the line a little toward San Francisco.

It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see that line start creeping toward the Chiefs as we get closer to game day. Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid carry a lot of weight with the two Super Bowl trophies they already have together. If heavy public money starts coming in on the Chiefs,  we’ll see movement in their direction.

Either way it’s unlikely we’ll see this get more than a point or two in either direction, and Sunday’s Super Bowl showdown in Las Vegas figures to be a tight game regardless of which team is favored.
